Frequently Asked Questions — Body Armour UK
Is body armour legal to buy in the UK?
Yes. Body armour is legal to purchase and wear in the UK for civilians. There is no licence required to buy a stab proof vest, ballistic vest, or slash resistant body armour. The only restriction is that it is an offence to carry body armour in public without reasonable excuse if you are a convicted criminal under the Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015. For the vast majority of law-abiding buyers — security staff, NHS workers, lone workers, and concerned individuals — body armour is entirely legal.
What types of body armour does Titan Depot sell?
We supply three main categories: ballistic (bulletproof) vests rated to NIJ Level II or IIIA, stab proof vests rated to UK Home Office KR1 and KR2 standards, and slash resistant body armour made with Cut-Tex® PRO or Kevlar lining. We also carry multi-threat vests combining ballistic and stab protection. All products are in stock in the UK with fast despatch.
What is the difference between stab proof and bulletproof body armour?
Stab proof vests are designed to stop knife and spike threats — they use tightly woven or laminated materials that absorb and distribute the energy of a pointed blade. Bulletproof (ballistic) vests stop projectiles using layers of ultra-high-strength fibres such as Kevlar or Dyneema that catch and deform the bullet. The two threats require different materials: a ballistic vest does not automatically stop a knife, and a stab vest does not stop bullets. Multi-threat vests combine both protection types.
Can I wear body armour covertly under my clothes?
Yes. Our covert body armour range is designed to be worn under a shirt or uniform without being visible. Covert vests are typically 4–6 mm thin, lightweight, and fitted with moisture-wicking comfort covers. They are widely used by plain-clothes security personnel, NHS staff, lone workers, and anyone who requires discreet protection without an overt tactical appearance.
What NIJ level body armour do I need?
NIJ Level IIA is the lightest and stops lower-velocity pistol rounds. NIJ Level II stops 9 mm and .357 Magnum rounds. NIJ Level IIIA is the highest soft armour rating and stops .44 Magnum and most handgun threats — this is the most common choice for civilians and security professionals in the UK. NIJ Level III and IV require hard plates and protect against rifle rounds, which is specialist military/law enforcement territory. For most UK buyers, NIJ Level IIIA covert soft armour is the correct choice.
How long does body armour last?
Most certified body armour has a rated service life of 5 years, after which the ballistic or stab-resistant fibres may degrade and the armour should be replaced. Real-world lifespan depends on usage, care, and storage conditions. UV exposure, moisture, and physical compression (sitting in a vehicle daily) all accelerate degradation. Always check the manufacturer's date stamp and replace on schedule.
